HMIS

The Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) is a federally mandated information system used to collect data on homeless individuals and families in the community.  The information is used for advocacy purposes, to track program successes and/or failures, and to record an unduplicated count of persons served.

Point in Time Count 2014

Local Volunteers will be out for the annual Point in Time Count, an event counting the homeless population in Flint and Genesee County beginning Wednesday, January 29, 2014.

The count itself will include various phases conducted over a three day period. During the first phase agency staff will count individuals staying at emergency shelters in Genesee County on the night of Wednesday, the 29th. Simultaneously, volunteers will be present in various locations throughout Genesee County from 11AM to 4PM. These locations will be open to count individuals staying in places unfit for human habitation. The final phase consists of volunteers manning and canvassing various county sites and events on Thursday the 30thd and Friday the 31st to count homeless individuals receiving services at those sites, who were homeless on the night of the 29th. Organizers will then use computer-based induplication techniques to identify individuals who may have been counted multiple times. Data collected from the Point in Time Count is used to assess the needs of the local homeless population.

The data is also used in grant applications seeking funding from the U S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD); a process that brings in millions of dollars annually for homeless programs in Genesee County. The Point in Time Count is coordinated by the Genesee County Continuum of Care, a collaborative group of agencies working together to address homelessness in the area.
