Organization Accomplishments

Over the past Seventeen years, MCD has played a key role in Housing, Community and Economic Development of Flint and Genesee County.

  • Established Building Neighborhood Capacity Program for Ward 1 and Ward 3 as a National Pilot Site for Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative in partnership with Federal Agencies and Foundations.
  • Became a Community Development Financial Institution certified by the CDFI Fund of U.S. Department of Treasury with support of Technical Assistance and capacity building grant of $100,000 from CDFI Fund and $75,000 from C.S. Mott Foundation.
  • Established the first $100,000 micro-loan fund program with assistance from C.S. Mott Foundation
  • Developed underwriting guidelines for Senior Tax Foreclosure Prevention Loans and Micro-Enterprise Loans
  • Obtained $1.5 million grant from U.S. Department of Treasury to issue micro and enterprise loans. 16 businesses have been provided with loans stabilizing 183 jobs with annual combined gross income of $12 million.
  • Partnered with Genesee County and created Affordable Home Mortgage Loan fund of $900,000
  • Recognized by SBA as microloan intermediary for region (four counties)
  • Approved as member of Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis – opportunity to bring annually Affordable Housing Program funding of $600,000 for down payment assistance and homeowner rehab for Flint and Genesee County.
  • Recognized by Federal Home Administration (FHA) as secondary lender
  • Partnered with LISC, Mott Community College and Career Alliance to establish Financial Opportunity Center (FOC) in Genesee County.
  • Received support from LISC for CDFI operations and FOC.
  • Obtained a Youth Build Grant of $1.1 million from U.S. Department of Labor for three consecutive two-year terms.
  • Received annual grant support from C.S. Mott Foundation for general operations – providing opportunity to leverage federal and state funding for programs.
  • Received grant support of over $700,000 from financial institutions (since inception)
  • Received grant support of over $200,000 from Ruth Mott Foundation, Community Foundation of Greater Flint and United Way to leverage resources with State and Federal grants
  • Planned, Organized and Hosted Flint Area Ambassador City Summit in partnership with Flint Area Association of Realtors and support from C.S. Mott Foundation.
  • Technical assistance to nonprofits
  • Coordinating body for Federal and State funding to Flint/Genesee Continuum of Care (CoC) – Plan and develop CoC annual strategy for federal and state funding. Obtained $30 million over fifteen years from HUD and in partnership with local nonprofits Created 375 units of Permanent Supportive Housing
  • Established Homeless Prevention Endowment Fund with the Community Foundation of Greater Flint
  • Established Homeless Management Information Systems in partnership with United Way and Michigan State Housing Development Authority
  • Facilitate planning and implementation meetings
  • Serve as Flint/Genesee County Coordinator for Continuum of Care expanding to four county region
  • Facilitated the development of 254 multifamily units leveraging federal funds with low income housing tax credits and MSHDA financing
  • Planned and implemented a $2.5 million combined grant of City, County and MSHDA during the recession to assist families with Housing Placement.
  • Facilitate MSHDA Emergency Shelter Grants approximately $3.2 million for Flint/Genesee County nonprofits
  • Facilitated the development of Ten-Year plan to End Chronic homelessness for Flint/Genesee County and submitted to MSHDA as part of the State plan.
  • Received funding from MSHDA to address components of the Ten Year Plan, in partnership with non-profit agencies: $1 million grant to provide Permanent Supportive Housing to unaccompanied homeless individuals
  • $200,000 grant to provide Permanent Supportive Housing to homeless Youth
  • Received funding of $450,000 from County to plan and implement Tenant Based Rental Assistance.
  • Established Housing Counseling for pre and post purchase and Foreclosure. Recognized by HUD and MSHDA as Housing Counseling Agency. Received over $1 million for counseling program in partnership with The Housing Partnership Network, City of Flint, and MSDHA.
  • Implemented a $1.5 million Flint 2000 revitalization grant from C.S. Mott Foundation (DTM/Third Avenue Corridor) in partnership with:
    • Kettering University
    • Hurley Medical Center
    • University of Michigan
  • School/Community Program in Partnership with: Flint Community Schools
  • Creation of Family Service Center at DTM Elementary School with Department of Human Services.
  • Partnership with Kettering University – support from Community Development endowment fund provided by C.S. Mott Foundation. Annual support of $50,000
  • Summer Youth Initiative “Training Leaders of Tomorrow” in partnership with Community Foundation of Greater Flint, Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce and Work Force Development. Invested over $700,000 in planning and implementing the program.
  • Implemented a Ruth Mott Foundation initiative on developing Youth Ambassadors. The efforts of the Youth in the program led to the creation of “Its Our Neighborhood Too”.
  • Established a $200,000 Home Retention Fund for seniors to provide gap financing loans with Home Equity Conversion Mortgage and Senior Tax Foreclosure Prevention Loan Fund with support from C.S. Mott Foundation
  • Home Counseling – Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM), Pre and Post Purchase Counseling to families, Foreclosure and default counseling to families and seniors, Smart Buyer Workshops including 16 hours of financial literacy to families.
  • Through Metro’s Reverse Mortgage Counseling we have assisted over 297 senior families with loans for $19.8 million since Jan 1 2004 thru December 2009. This program focused on assisting seniors to stay in their own homes and have better quality of life.
  • Gap financing in partnership with Genesee County Metropolitan Planning Commission and City of Flint – assisted thirty families with new homes providing over $30,000 per family for eleven families.
  • Down Payment and Closing Costs Assistance Program – 550 loans with $2.9 million leveraging $30 million in mortgages
  • City of Mt. Morris – Planning of 200 acre PUD and development of 24 single family homes
  • Rehabbed nine homes using MSHDA Housing Purchase and Rehab Program funds in 2005 and 2006
  • Individual Development Account (IDA) Partnership with:

  • Assisted over 122 families with financial literacy training and developing savings of $1,000 matched with $3,000.00. The funds were provided for education, transportation, micro business set up and homeownership purposes
